Everything seemed in place for Athletico Madrid to go on and win the Champions League this season. There was no team with Cristiano Ronaldo in it. And, Diego Simeone has never lost a Champions League knockout against a team without Ronaldo. But as the game progressed, and Simeone’s plan seemed to be working, Adams scored a sensational 85th-minute winner for RB Leipzig.
The plan set by Diego Simeone was a simple one. And given the format of the Champions League, it should have worked for Athletico Madrid. Sit back, absorb the pressure and when Leipzig gives you a little space, brake into a counter. Simeone’s ultimate smash and grab never came. Partly, Diego Costa is to be blamed for not running enough. Carrasco had plenty of chances initially but could not capitalise either.
Joao Felix justified his price tag in the Champions League
Off the bench and on the score sheet. When nothing seemed to work for the colchoneros, Simeone had to turn to his £128 million signing. And boy, did Joao Felix deliver. Athletico Madrid were doing well defensively. But at the attacking half, they lacked the cutting edge until Joao Felix stepped up. He took responsibility for taking the penalty at such a huge moment in the match. He was calm, composed and wanted Athletico Madrid to lift the Champions League in his country. We feel sorry for the young Portuguese.
This has left Barcelona as the last Spanish team in the champions league. FC Barcelona faces a difficult test tonight vs Bayern, and if they are to crash out, we might be looking at a semi finale without a Spanish team yet again.
