Pep Guardiola gets the gameplan wrong for Manchester City

From the first minute, something seemed odd about Manchester City. Perhaps it was due to the fact that they have never been ahead of the quarter-finals. But pretty soon it became clear that Manchester City had played with three centre backs. Pep Guardiola might have had Bayern Munich in his mind seeking to play defence in their next Champions League game. But he forgot he had to beat Lyon first. Despite keeping 3 defenders Manchester City conceded a goal and did not have the attacks or powers to respond.

Manchester City had just 4 true attacking players in the first half

Kevin De Bruyne, Raheem Sterling, Gabriel Jesus and Ilkay Gundogan were all that Manchester City had to test the strong Lyon backline. The decision to play 3 Center backs meant City had very few attacking options. Why at all did it take Pep Guardiola 60 minutes to bring on Riyad Mahrez, whilst it was clearly visible to the untrained eye. Ultimately, the first goal came after the Mahrez substitution.

Lack of attack from the Manchester City midfield

Except for Kevin De Bruyne, there was really no attack from the Manchester City midfield. Rodri and Gundogan were not enough to make a difference in the all-important Champions League tie. Using Bernardo Silva or David Silva perhaps even youngster Phil Foden mighty have seen City in the Champions League semis.

It’s a long way back from here for Manchester City. They were tipped the favourites to stop Bayern Munich on their way to Champions League glory. The players need to keep their heads up and focus on the next season coming in fast.
